In this BPT interview chef Simon Regan talks about the National Commis Chef Apprenticeship and the National Culinary Skills Competition that took place in Killarney, Co Kerry in February 2024.

At present in Ireland there are currently 181 apprentices on the programme across 9 collaborating providers.  The apprenticeship was developed with Kerry ETB in collaboration with the IHF, Failte Ireland, RAI and many more industry stakeholders.  Overall the Commis Chef Programme has had 429 Enrolments since its commencement in 2017 and there are another 6 class intakes planned for 2024.

In relation to the recent Commis Chef Apprenticeship Skills Competition on the 7th February 2024, it was hosted by Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) in the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney.  It brought together 52 competitors from across the 9 collaborating provider and featured six display competitions and five live cooking competitions.

One of the highlights of the showcase was the presentation of 21 awards, recognising excellence in various categories.  The handcrafted Chefs’ Kiss Trophies were hand crafted by the Stone Mason and Stone Cutting Apprentices from Kerry College.
